What is a contact force?

A contact force is when 2 objects are physically touching. Tension in a rope is an example of a contact force

What is an example of a contact force?

An example of a contact force is **FRICTION **(aeroplane landing on the sea), the force of the friction is acting between the water and the aeroplane. This causes the aeroplane to slow down and come to a stop.

AIR RESISTANCE is also a contact force.
eg. as a skydiver falls through the air, air particles collide with the parachute, this causes the force of air resistance to act upwards.

NORMAL CONTACT FORCE eg. a lamp on a table - the lamp is exerting a downward force on the table. The force is the weight of the lamp, at the same time, the table is exerting an upward force on the lamp. This is called a normal contact force and this can only happen if the 2 objects are in direct contact.

GRAVITATIONAL FORCE attracts all objects to other objects eg. the gravitational force attracts the International Space Station to the Earth and the Earth to the International Space Station.

ELECTROSTATIC FORCE is the force between 2 CHARGED objects. Objects with opposite charges experience an electrostatic force of attraction. Objects with the same type of charge experience an electrostatic force of repulsion. The 2 objects are physically separated as the electrostatic force is a non-contact force.
