Q

Describe what happens in the first satge of general adaptation syndrome

A

Stage 1- Alarm reaction

When a stressor is recognised the hypothalamus in the brain triggeres adrenaline for flight or fight.

If stressor ends, returns to normal.

Q

Describe what happens in stage 2 if the General Adaptation syndrome.

A

Stage 2- resistence

If stressor continues, the bodys resources are used (e.g glucose hormones).

Q

Describe stage 3 of GAS

A

stage 3 - exhaustion

Resources to resist stressor is gone and person has same symptoms (e.g sweating raised heart rate).

Stress related illness are likely.

Q

Describe what happens in sympatho-medullary system

A
  • The hypothalamus signals the adrenal medullas to release adrenaline and noradrenaline hormone into the bloodstream
  • hormones circulate in the blood and stimulate target organs e.g heart

Q

Describe what happens in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal system

A
  • hypothalamus activates the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal gland
  • hormone corticotropin releasing factor (crf) is relaeased.
  • pituitary gland detects (crf) and releases hormone adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
  • Adrenal glands are stimulated by ACTH to release cortisol.
