Plant Growth and Development Flashcards
What does apical meristem mean?
region of cells capable of division and growth in the root and shoot tips in plants (tips of buds, stems + roots)
Define Primary Growth
all growth from apical meristem = PG
always increase height
What does lateral meristems mean?
areas of actively diving tissue in stems and roots
Grows width wise
Define Secondary Growth
increase width
plants w/out lateral meristems = no SG
In what plants does SG happens in?
woody species
wood = product of SG
Where does SG happen?
cork cambium (to form bark)
vascular cambium (form secondary xylem and phloem)
true of false, PG and SG does not happen at the same time in the first year
FALSE
How are plants able to detect changes through light?
photorecptors (molecule that reacts when struck by light of a different wavelength
When is transpiration highest?
on hot sunny days
How does temp affect plants?
above or below optimum range = plant grows more slowly
acts as signal to begin developmental stage (ex. some plants on germinate after a period of cold)
What 3 roles does soil play
provides a medium for plant to anchor, retain H2O where nutrients are dissolved, provides roots with air
Soil must have sufficient….
humus –> orgnic matter made up of partially decomposed remains of organisms
What is the PH of soil important?
ph of soil = ph of water in soil,
determines where nutrients will easily be dissolved
