Plant Growth + Development - Hormones Flashcards
What is Auxin reposnible for?
cell elongation
inhibits cell division in some tissue (apical dominance/ lateralm, primary root growth)
Why di some herbicides contain auxin?
rapid growth = outstrips carb supply -> run out of energy and die
What else does auxin help with?
help regulate gravitotropism, promotes stomotal closure, stimulates cell division in vascular cambium
What is gibberlins responsible for?
mainly responsible for making plants grow taller and bigger
Where is gibberlins produced in higher amounts?
shoots + developing seeds
What other processes do gibberlins help regulate?
seed germination, stem elongation, and flowering, stored carb reserves
play a role in response to temp changes (stop growing is not in optimal)
What is cytokins mainly reponsible for?
stimulating cell division and growth in plants.
help regulate how fast a plant grows, how many branches it has, and even how long it stays alive.
How do cytokins slow down aging?
inhibiting protein break down + stimulate protein synthesis
helps inhibit the effects of ethylene
What is ethylene mainly reponsible for?
promote fruit ripening and senescence (aging process in plants)
What is abscisic acid mainly reponsible for?
regulating stress responses in plants
inhibit seed germination
promote dormancy
control closing and opening of stomata when environment is bad
