Plant Responses To Stress. Flashcards
Factors for plant stress?
1- cold
2- excess light
3- drought
4- pests
When temperatures drop to freezing or as the seasons change the plants use two main strategies to not die.
What are these two strategies?
1- abscission, plant will drop leaves or ripen and detach fruit such as nuts.
2- plant import salt to the cytoplasm and vacuoles to lower temperature at which water freezes.
How does the Arabidopsis thaliana respond to excess light?
By releasing a carotenoid called zeaxanthin which effectively shuts down chlorophyll’s ability to absorb photons, slowing photosynthesis.
What’s the role of abscisic acid on drought?
ABA will signal stomata to stay closed slowing both photosynthesis and water loss.
How are plant adapted to stop grazers?
1- barks
2- spiny or hairy leaves
3- thorns
Explain the importance of strychnine for plants
It is an alkaloid that act as pesticides or taste bitter. It has pharmacological effects on insects or animals, including humans
What is the plants respond to pests
Production of volatile organic compounds or alkaloids to act as insecticides, or to have a bitter taste.
