Plants Flashcards
What does the Xylem transport?
Water and Minerals
What does the Phloem transport?
Food substances dissolved sugars
What is the stomata’s purpose?
Allows gases to diffuse in and out of the leaf and limit water loss.
What cell is located beneath the palisade mesophyll?
Spongy mesophyll
What is the purpose of the upper and lower epidermis?
Form a protective layer
Why are there air spaces between the spongy mesophyll cells?
So gases can pass between the cells
Where are the palisade cells found?
Top of the leaf. To allow better access to sunlight (for photosynthesis)
How are the palisade cells arranged? Why?
Tightly packed together so that they can fit into the top layer of the leaf. To allow more photosynthesis
Where are chloroplasts found?
Palisade cells
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the movement of water from the roots to the leaves through the xylem and then the loss of water by evaporation
What is the transpiration stream?
The movement of water through the xylem from the roots to the leaves. Driven by transpiration
