Plastics Flashcards
What is plastic memory?
Each time a plastic is reheated it will attempt to return to its original shape. Unless it has been damaged or over heated.
What is a thermo plastic?
A thermoplastic is made up of lines of molecules with A A FEW cross linkages. This allows them to go soft when heated and hard when cold.
What are the properties of acrylic?
Resistant to most acids and weather conditions
Easily machined, cemented and polished.
A good electrical insulator.
Safe with food
Ten times more impact resistant than glass.
Splinters and scratches easily.
Acrylic uses
Signs and aircrafts.
What are the properties of polythene?
Can be moulded into anything.
Polythene uses?
You can make bags.
What are the properties of polyvinyl Chloride?
It can be welded or bonded using adhesive.
Uses of polyvinyl chloride?
Water pipes.
What is a thermosetting plastic?
Thermosetting plastics are made up of lines of molecules which are HEAVILY CROSS LINKED. They can be heated and reshaped but after the first time they become permanently stiff and solid.
What are the properties of Polyurethane?
It forms the basis of many paints and varnishes because it is very tough.
It has water resistant qualities.
What are the uses of Polyurethane?
Paints and varnishes.
What are the properties of Melamine Formaldehyde
Used in the production of plastic laminates because of its smooth surface and hygienic qualities.
What are the uses of Melamine Formaldehyde?
It is used in electrical plugs and sockets.
It is an excellent insulator.
What are the properties of Polyester resins?
If resins are combined with tough materials like fibre glass it will result in a very tough material that can resist impact.
Polyester resins uses?
Car body repairs
Sailing boats
Corrugated sheet. Because of its lightness , toughness and resistance to water.
