Plate Margins and Earthquakes Flashcards
1
Q
Destructive Plate Margin and the result of them?
A
- Plate is Destroyed
- Occurs when oceanic crust meets a continental crust
- Oceanic crust is denser then continental crust, it is made from basalt from the mantle
- Continental crust made from granite
- Oceanic crust subducts into the mantle
Result- Earthquakes, Volcanos, Fold Mountains, Subduction trenches.
2
Q
Constructive Plate Margin? (boundaries)
A
- Most commonly where 2 oceanic plates move apart
- Where magma rises it creates new oceanic crust
- Rising magma creates a ridge ( Mid-Atlantic ridge)
- This helps the plates move through the process of ridge push
- There are Volcanos and Earthquakes but not very powerful
3
Q
Conservative Plate Margin?
A
- These plates are relative to each other, crust is neither made or destroyed
- Create earthquakes, some are very large (San Andreas fault in California)
- It is a right-lateral strike slip fault ( move past each other horizontally)
4
Q
Collison Plate Margin?
A
- 2 continental plates collide
- As they are same densities neither 1 subducts
- Instead they buckle upwards
- Can be deadly earthquakes
