Q

What is the mantle?

A

The mantle is a semi-liquid layer of magma or molten rock that moves due to convection currents

Q

What are tectonic plates?

A

Huge slabs of crust that float on the semi-liquid mantle and move or “drift” very slowly

15
Q

Why do the plates move?

A

NRG trapped during the Big Bang and nuclear explosions in the core 6000km down create vast amounts of heat. As this heat tries to escape it “boils” semi-molten rocks in the mantle and slowly moves the crust above it

16
Q

What is the constructive plate boundary

A

Plates move apart

17
Q

What is the destructive plate boundary

A

Plates move together

18
Q

What is the conservative plate boundary

A

Plates slide alongside each other

19
Q

What is the collision plate boundary

A

2 continental plates crash into each other

20
Q

What is an example of a constructive plate boundary

A

Mid Atlantic Ocean ridge (Iceland)

21
Q

What is an example of a destructive plate boundary?

A

Peru - Chile trench subduction zone

22
Q

What is an example of a conservative plate boundary

A

San Andreas fault, California

23
Q

What is an example of a collision plate boundary

A

Himalayan mountains
