rhyme
the repitition of sounds at the end of words. (in a,b,c,d,… format)
rhythm
pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem. Alliteration, rhyme, assonance, and consonance can sometimes be related to rhythm.
alliteration
ex. Peter Piper, please pass the pickled pomegranates!
assonance
repetition of vowel sounds. ex. it gleamed, steamed, and creamed.
consonance
repetition of consonant sounds. ex. mammals named Sam are clammy
metaphor
comparing 2 things without using “like” or “as”. ex. Fear is an evil smile chuckling.
simile
a comparison using “like” or “as”.
repetition
tecnique with words, sounds, phrases, or lines are repeated. ex.
I could hear people laughing.
I could hear popcorn crunching.
I could hear soda fizzing.
I could hear deep low booms through the wall.
onomatopoeia
the use of words whose sounds echo their meanings. ex. CRASH! BOOM! HAHAHAHAHA! EEEEEEEEEK!
pun
funny use of words with more than one meaning. ex. At a pizza shop: 7 days without pizza makes one weak. “Trust Sleepy’s, for the rest of your life!”
personification
giving something human qualities
