Immutable characteristics
Characteristics determined at birth or characteristics individuals should not be asked to change.
Discrimination
Treating people differently because of their race, gender, religion, or national origin; that, and it’s negative form, excludes all members of a certain group from some rights, opportunities, or privileges.
Disparate impact
Involves an employment policy or practice that, although seemingly neutral, adversely impacts a person or group.
Affirmative action
Programs that are intended to prevent discrimination and present hiring and promotion practices and are used to remedy past discrimination in hiring and promotion.
Consent decree
Agreement related to an employer achieving a balance in terms of race, ethnicity, and gender in the workplace.
Bona fide occupational qualification
Requirement that is necessary to the normal operation of an organization.
Qualified individual with a disability
Interpreted to mean the job applicant must be able to perform the essential elements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Reasonable accommodation
Refers to new construction or modification of existing facilities and work schedules, as long as the modification does not cause the agency undue hardship.
Multiple Hurdle Procedure
A battery of tests or hurdles that must be completed before a recruit can become a police officer.
Status tests
citizenship possession, ability to obtain a drivers license, residency requirements, and age and education level.
Simulation or work sample test
Measures job skills of an applicant using samples of behavior under realistic job like conditions.
galvanic skin response
Changes in electrical resistance in the skin over time.
Assessment center
A formal process that involves a series of exercises simulation of role-playing designed to test how well a candidate will perform in a job.

In service training
Also known as continuing professional education, but intent is to keep professionals up-to-date with continuous changes affecting their practice.
Recruit training
Also known as basic training, the first the initial training successful police applicants are exposed to; topics such as criminal law, traffic code enforcement, arrest techniques, firearm training, self-defense tactics, vehicle searches, and a host of other similar topics are presented. Successful recruit training provide certification as a sworn police or peace officer.
Field training
Period of time immediately following successful recruit training. During this time new officers are paired with specially trained veterans and I evaluated regarding how to perform on the street, normally in the patrol division. Field training programs normally last anywhere from six weeks to six months.
Probationary period
Period of time during which the performance of new officers, from the day they start training, is a evaluated. This period of time ranges from six months to two years, depending on the agency. It should also be noted that during this time officers are employees at will and do not enjoy any of the employee directions afforded those officers who successfully completed their probationary period.
Field training officers
Officers who have been selected and trained to direct, evaluate, and correct the performance recruits immediately after their basic academy training.
Police training programs
Recently developed field training program that many researches and police executives claim is effective at developing new officers entering the friend with problem solving skills rarely seen at the early stages of their career. The PTO program involves two primary facing areas: substantive topics and core competencies.

Police accredited training online
Innovative and inexpensive way to provide a myriad of in service training opportunities to officers on a state wide basis. This asynchronous, online training initiative was formed by a partnership between Minnesota chiefs of police association, the Minnesota sheriff’s association, and the league of Minnesota cities insurance trust.
Law enforcement assistance administration
During the 60’s and 70’s, provided a billion dollars each year to improve and strengthen criminal justice agencies.
Office of the police corps and law enforcement education
Created By the us department of justice in 1999, the goal of this programs was to weave a college education with state of the art police training to produce highly qualified personnel who would be able to confront the demands and intricacies of 21st century policing. Unfortunately, funding for the program has been eliminated and the police corps is no longer awarding scholarships or providing training.

One of the largest professional organizations in the world dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the criminal justice profession.
