1980s and 1990s: Conservative Party
The New Right approach was very influential
- this social policy aimed to strengthen nuclear families, by emphasising self-help through increasing reliance on the family
1997-2010: Labour Party
Some of the new Right ideas were continued, with continual concerns expressed over ‘dysfunctional’ families and the lack of male role models
- showed recognition of the growing diversity, more emphasis placed on the care of children
- policies to support lone parents in moving from dependence back to employment- minimum wage
- increase in free childcare and nursery education
- civil partnership act 2005
2010 onwards: Conservative- Liberal Democrat coalition policy
- renewed emphasis on the importance of marriage, and the promotion of marriage, as opposed to cohabitation
- troubled families programme
- offer tax benefits to married couples
- cuts in major areas of public spending on welfare services
