Population Indicators Flashcards
What is natural increase?
Birth outnumbers death, the global population expands
What is natural decrease?
When deaths outnumbers birth, the population declines
What is total fertility rate?
The average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime
What is crude birth rate?
Number of live births over the total population x1000
Expressed per year
As a measure of fertility it has drawbacks because it is strongly influenced by the age-sex structure
What is mortality?
Occurrence of death. They depend on age, diet, healthcare, economic status and disease.
What is crude death rate?
The total number of deaths over the total population x1000
Similar disadvantage to crude birth rate
What is infant mortality rate?
The number of deaths of under 1 years old per 1,000 per year
What is migration rate?
The rate of emigrants and immigrants in one area
What is population density?
The measurement of population, usually expressed as no. of people per square km or mile
What is migration?
The permanent or semi-permanent movement of people from one place to another
What is net migration?
The difference in numbers of in-migrants and out-migrants over a certain period.
In-migrants exceed out-migrants= net migrational gain
How is migration selective?
Age and sex selective. As a result it is a major influence on population structure at national, regional and local scales.
