PPE Autumn Year 1 Plants Pre Y12 Flashcards
Water in plants
Enters the roots by osmosis
Travels through the root to the xylem- transports water through the plant & up to the leaves
Symplast
Water moves through the root via the cytoplasm of the root cells
Water has to cross the cell membrane- regulates the passage of water & dissolved minerals
Apoplast system
Water moves through the cell walls & the spaces between the cells
No membranes to regulate the passage
Phloem
Transport of carbohydrates, sugars and other organic compounds (Translocation)
Arranged in tubes so solutions of sugars can move through them easily
Translocation occurs in sieve tubes
Companion cells next to the sieve tubes are believed to actively transport sugar into the sieve tubes & water follows by osmosis
