Pre-Practical 1 Flashcards
What are the layers of the scalp
Skin Connective tissue Aponeurosis of the occipitofrontalis Loose connective tissue Periosteum
Why do head wounds bleed profusely?
The connective tissue in the second layer prevents vasoconstriction
What are emissary veins?
Emissary veins are valveless veins that transverse the diploe of the skull and can spread infections intracranially
What is the nervous supply for the dermatomes of the face?
The trigeminal nerve (Cr N V) supplies the face via the opthalmic, maxilary and mandibular branches
The back of the head is supplied by C2,3,4
Are the branches of the trigeminal sensory, motor or both
Opthalmic - Sensory
Maxillary - Sensory
Mandibular - Both
What are the key muscles in the face for facial expression?
Orbiculis Oculi
Orbiculis Oris
Occiptofrontalis
Buccinator
What fibres does the facial nerve (Cr N VII) contain?
It contains motor fibres (responsible for facial expression), special sensory (taste) and parasympathetic fibres (lacrimal, sublingual and submandibular glands)
What is the path of the facial nerve (Cr N VII)?
The facial nerve leaves via the Internal Acoustic Meatus (IAM) where it transverses the middle ear to exit via the stylomastoid foramen passing through but not innervating the parotid gland
What structures pass through the parotid gland?
Facial nerve (Cr N VII) Retromandibular nerve Facial artery Parotid duct External carotid Artery
What way does the head move when the SCM contracts?
The head will tilt to the same side as the contraction but will turn the other way
Where does the common carotid artery arise from and at what level does it bifurcate?
The CCA arises from the braciocephalic trunk on the right and on the left directly from the arch of the aorta
It bifurcates at the level of C4
What forms the cervical plexus?
The ventral rami of C1-C4
Name the strap muscles
TOSS my gravy spoon, darling Infrahyoid: Suprahyoid: Thyrohyoid Mylohyoid Omohyoid Geniohyoid Sternohyoid Stylohyoid Sternothyroid Digastric
Describe the arterial blood supply of the thyroid
The thyroid receives blood from the external carotid artery via the superior thyroid artery and from the inferior thyroid artery which arises from the subclavian artery
Describe the venous drainage of the thyroid
Venous drainage is via the superior thyroid vein draining into the IJV and the inferior thyroid vein draining into the left brachiocephalic vein
