How does pregnancy effect oral health
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can increase the risk of developing gum disease, as well as other dental problems such as tooth decay, erosion, and sensitivity
What should you consider when providing dental tx to pregnant women
Pregnant women should inform their dentist about their pregnancy and any medications they are taking. Certain dental treatments, such as X-rays and elective procedures, should be postponed until after the first trimester or until after delivery. Felypressin/octapressin should be avoided in pregnant people (felypressin is a derivative of oxytocin which has the potential to cause uterine contractions)
What medical considerations should we give to pregnant patients
Certain medications used in dentistry, such as tetracycline antibiotics, should not be used during pregnancy due to potential harm to the developing fetus. Any medications prescribed during pregnancy should be carefully selected and monitored by a healthcare provider.
What are the positioning considerations for pregnant px
Pregnant women may be more comfortable in a semi-seated position during dental treatment to avoid the pressure on the vena cava, a major blood vessel that can be compressed when lying flat on the back.
