What is first-aid?
the immediate treatment of injured animals or those suffering from sudden illness
When is first-aid administered?
as soon as possible

What are the aims of first-aid?
to preserve life
to reduce pain and suffering
to prevent the situation deteriorating
to promote recovery
What should be done before administering first-aid?
asses the situation for danger
make sure the animal is correctly restrained before handling or lifting
What does the veterinary surgeons act state about first-aid?
schedule 3 states that in an emergency anyone may give first-aid
What are the three classifications of first-aid?
Life-threatening emergences
emergencies requiring prompt attention but not immediately life-threatening
minor
What would be classed as a life-threatening emergency?
unconsciousness
conscious collapse with dyspnoea and cyanosis
haemorrhage
severe burns
snake bites
poisoning
What would be classed as a emergency requiring prompt attention but is not immediately life-threatening?
dyspnoea (difficulty breathing)
fractures/dislocations
gaping wounds
What would be classed as a minor emergency?
abscess
conscious collapse
lameness
insect sting
minor wound
What should be followed in a first-aid situation?
DR ABC
Danger - check the area
Response - check the animal for any conscious response
Airways - check the airways are clear, pull the tongue forwards and remove any collar or harness
Breathing - look and listen, if an animal is not breathing proceed to artificial respiration
Circulation - check the heartbeat/pulse, apply regular, intermittent pressure to the chest if you are sure there is no heartbeat
