Production techniques and systems Flashcards
What’s the advantages of automation
-Can increase speed
-Don’t need to rest / take breaks
-More accurate
-High consistency
-Can be used in dangerous situations where using humans would be dangerous
What’s the disadvantages of automation
-Replace human workers creating fewer jobs
-Expensive starting up cost
-Can’t carry out jobs requiring human judgement
What is flexible manufacturing systems (FMS)
Different machines that carry out the different stages of production.
What is FMS
Flexible manufacturing systems
Why is flexible manufacturing systems called flexible
It’s easy to adapt the layout if the the design of a product changes - change the order of the machine
What is lean manufacturing
The Japanese approach to manufacturing that aims to minimise the amount of resources used and waste produced.
What is the aim of lean manufacturing
Minimise costs and maximise efficiency
What is the Just in Time system
A system of stock control is form of lean manufacturing. Materials and components are delivered as they’re needed and used as soon as they’re delivered.
What’s the advantages of JiT
-Reduces the amount of space needed for storage
-Saves money in renting storage facilities and in materials that won’t be used
What’s the disadvantages of JiT
-Relies on materials and components being delivered on time and fault free
-Money can be lost if the two things don’t happen
What is CAD
Computer aided design
What is CAM
Computer aided manufacture
