Properties and change of matter (quiz) Flashcards

1
Q

Physical Property

A

Are readily observable or measurable. Examples of physical properties are: color, smell, freezing point, boiling point, meting point, volume, mass, luster, attraction to magnets, can light pass through it, viscosity and density, etc. *Note that measuring each of these properties will not alter the basic nature of the substance.

Q

Chemical property

A

Properties that describe a change to the chemical nature of matter. Chemical Properties are only observable during a chemical reaction. For example, you might not know if sulfur is combustible unless you tried to burn it. Examples of chemical properties are heat of combustion, reactivity with water, reactivity with oxygen, reactivity with light, reactivity with acids or bases, pH, etc.

Q

Reactivity

A

Describes how easily one substance reacts with something else. Elements in the Alkali Metal family (family #1) are the most reactive. Elements in the Nobel Gas family (family #18) are the least reactive.

Q

Physical Changes

A

Are those changes that do not result in the production of a new substance. IF you melt a block of ice, you still have H2O at the end of the change. If you break a bottle, you still have glass. Painting a piece of wood will not make it stop being wood. Some common examples of Physical changes are melting, freezing, condensing, breaking, crushing, cutting, and bending.

Q

Chemical Changes (reactions)

A

Changes that result in the production of another substance with different properties. In other words, the composition of the substance changes. Common examples of chemical changes are: digestion, respiration, photosynthesis, burning, oxidation, and decomposition.

Q

Clues for identifying physical changes

A

*Change in temperature (heating or cooling).
*Change in state of matter (melting, evaporation, freezing, condensation, dissolving).
*Change in shape (breaking, cutting, bending, crushing).
*For food… the TASTE stays the SAME
*Change in motion
*Color change – Shouldn’t be your ONLY indicator.

Q

Clues for identifying chemical changes

A

*Different odor is produced
*Anytime anything burns
* Biochemical reactions (Decomposition, digestion, photosynthesis, chemosynthesis, cellular respiration, growth, healing, fermentation).
*Oxidation (reacts with oxygen).
*Color change – Shouldn’t be your ONLY indicator
*release of gas, light, heat, sound, smoke
*Exploding
*Cooking or baking: to produce something with a DIFFERENT taste, smell (not to be confused with heating).
