Protein Flashcards
What is protein made of?
amino acids
What is a peptide?
a combination of two or more amino acids
What is a dipeptide?
when two amino acids combine
What is a polypeptide?
when three or more amino acids combine
What is a protein?
a very long chain of 50 or more amino acids
How many different amino acids are there?
21
Where must amino acids that cannot be synthesised come from?
food
What are the functions of protein?
build bones, muscles, cartilage and skin
repair damaged tissue
helps supply blood with nutrients
aids in digesting food
plays an important role in hormone regulation
excess protein is used for energy
What are the three main groups proteins are classified into?
globular
membrane
fibrous
What are the four levels of protein structure?
primary
secondary
tertiary
quaternary
How is protein digested?
begins with the action of an enzyme called pepsin
pepsin breaks the peptide bonds that hold the molecules together
completed in the small intestine by the pancreatic enzymes trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase
What does excess protein result in?
nitrogen is converted into ammonia then to urea by the liver
blood urea nitrogen content increases and extra urea is excreted in urine
water intake increases which results in a greater urine amount and a noticeable ammonia smell
What does too little protein intake result in?
reduced growth
rough haircoat
reduced hoof growth
abnormal skeletal development
reduced milk production
