Protein Metabolism Flashcards
What are Protein important for ?
Including antibodies produced by B -lymphocyte to help idetify and eliminate foreign such as bacteria or viruses.
What other factors of Proteins ?
Energy sources in food for example fruits and vegetbles in plants
Functional proteins
- Albumin - Provide colloid osmotic pressure in plasma
- Globulin - Immunity against invading organisms
- Fibronogen - Form blood clots repair leaks in circulatory system
3 . Proteins Transport
Amino acids are transported out of the cell to replenish the supply in the plasma
Intracelluar proteins are degraded into amino acids.
Digestion of Proteins
Begin in stomach protein rich foods enter the stomach and mixed by the enzyme pepsin . Which has the role in breaking down proteins into smaller peptides .
Digestion of proteins 2
Gastric juice mixes with chyme entering the small intestine releasing sodium bicarbonate in neutralizng HC1.
After small instestine releases digestive hormones including secretin stimulate digestive processes to break proteins down even further
What happens to excess proteins ?
As the body has no capacity or mechanism for storage so they are converted into glucose or ketones or decomposed .
Urea cycle processes nitrogen and facilitates its excretion from the body .
Ammonium ions are produced from the breakdown of amino acids
What is the urea cycle ?
Set of biochemical reactions that produces urea from ammonium ions to prevent a toxic level of ammonium in the body .
Transmission
Ammounium is combined with c02 resulting in urea or water .
Urea eliminnated through kidneys in the urine .
Use of ubiquitin :
Help regulate processes of other proteins
