Protists & Endosymbiotic Theory Flashcards
1
Q
How did Eukaryotes develop?
A
- endosymbiotic theory suggests that eukaryotic cells are the result of the symbiotic relationship between two or more prokaryotic cells.
2
Q
Pieces of evidence (protists)
A
- it is believed that membrane - bound organelles - are ancestors of once free - living prokaryotes
- two organelles present the strongest evidence (chloroplasts and mitochondrion)
3
Q
Comparing these organelles to prokaryotes (protists)
A
- similar membranes
- similar ribosomes
- reproduce by binary fission
- contain their own circular DNA with similar genes
4
Q
What is the cell type of Protists?
A
Eukaryotic
5
Q
How many cells does protists have? (Multicellular or unicellular?)
A
- mostly unicellular but some are multicellular
6
Q
What is the metabolism of protists?
A
Autotrophs or heterotrophs
7
Q
Protist Reproduction
A
- some protists can use sexual reproduction = conjugation
- all protists can use asexual reproduction = binary fission
8
Q
What are the types of protists?
A
- Animal - like
- Plant - like
- Fungus - like
9
Q
Protist Motility
A
- they are motile due to the following : flagella, pseudopods, cilia.
10
Q
Uses of protists
A
- seaweed (algae)
- carrageenan
- diatoms
- algae
- trichomonas hominis
11
Q
Identify 2 uses of protists:
A
- they serve as the foundation of the food chain
- they decompose
12
Q
What is the endosymbiotic theory? (Show evidence)
A
- one cell engulfed another cell, it survived then became the internal part of the host cell.
Evidence:
- mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell)
- chloroplast (photosynthesis)
