PSA Flashcards
Phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin and baribiturates are enzyme inducers or inhibitors ?
enzyme inducers
Chronic excess of alcohol and sulfonylureas act as inhibitors or inducers ?
inducers
Allopurinol, omeprazole, disulfiram, erythromycin, valrpoate, isoniazid, ciprofloxacin, ethanol ( acute intoxiciation ) and sulphonamides: these drugs are inducers or inhbitors ?
inhibitors
what is pharmacodynamics ?
effects of drugs on the body
what does pharmacokinetics mean ?
what does the body do to the drug: absorption, metabolism, excretion
What happens if long term corticosteroids for example prednisolone is stopped during surgery ?
profound hypotension, since patients have adrenal atrophy, thus unable to mount an adequate stress response to surgery. Thus IV steroids should be given during surgery
What are the steroids sick day rules ?
double the daily dose to counter the increased steroid requirement when ill
Which drugs need to be stopped before surgery ?
insulin, lithium, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, COC, HRT, K-sparing diuretics, oral hypoglycaemics, perindopril and other ACE inhibitors
How long before surgery should HRT/COC be stopped ?
4 weeks
How long before surgery should lithium be stopped ?
day before
How long before surgery should potassium sparing diuretics and ACE inhibitors be stopped ?
day of surgery
