General criteria for any psychiatric diagnosis?
- Symptoms cause clinically significant distress and dysfunction
- Not better explained by any other medical disorder or substance

Persistent elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and increased activity/energy PLUS 3+/DIGFAST for at least 1 week.
Manic episode
“Milder” manic episode lasting 4 days
Hypomanic episode
At least one manic episode (may or may not have history depressive or hypomanic episdoes)
Bipolar I
At least one hypomanic episode and a depressive episode (no full blown mania)
Bipolar II
Dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder) and at least one hypomanic episode, lasting at least 2 years
Cyclothymic disorder
Depressive symptoms associated with winter season that improve in summer or in response to phototherapy
Seasonal affective disorder
