eustress: good stress
distress: bad stress
Yerkes-dodson law
U shaped curve representing the relationship between stress and performance
maximal adaptablitity model
shows how people are able to adapt, and still perform well while being under stress.
Stressors and stress responses
Stressors: external circumstances that lead us to being stressed like traffic, but can also get worse
Stress responses: internal circumstances like increased blood pressure, etc. ( they can bring body back to homeostasis)
The brain parts that work for stress
Amygdala: stress starts there but the amygdala does not work alone, it works with 2 other parts like the
Hippocampus: new memories, brings back old memories of situations too
prefrontal complex: higher level of processing for things in the environment, it can suppress the amygdala due to the environment like a tiger is in a cage so I should not be scared
Which systems produce stress hormones:
ANS and HPA axis
parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system
SNS: causing an imbalance of homeostasis from stress (gas pedel of the car)
PNS: calms it down (break padel of the car)
what is cortisol?
It is basically the measure of stress in one’s body
Negative feedback loop
In the HNS: for examples, cortisol goes into the bloodstream to reduce extra glucose or etc.
Inflammatory response
Proteins that heal wounds, and acute stress for a while can also cause this response
Trier social stress test
An individual is asked to present something in front of a big number of audience, and it basically captures the acute stressors present during this experiment
Some people deal with one kind of stressor only. true or false?
False
perceived stress scale
aims to examine the extent in which an individual would perceive their lives as unpredictable, uncontrollable, or overloaded.
