A

description: superficial level, strength dec sl in deeper levels, but without feeling empty
indications: exterior or deficiency syndromes

indication:
- exterior syndrome
- deficiency syndrome

38
Q

deep/submerged pulse

A

description: next to bone, barely felt, absent on superficial, increase strength w/ depth

indication: interior syndrome

39
Q

slow pulse

A

description: 40-60 bpm, regular rhythm

indications:
- cold syndrome
- qi deficiency

40
Q

fast/rapid pulse

A

description: very fast, 90-140 bpm, regular rhythm

indications: heat syndrome

41
Q

excess pulse

A

description: felt in all 3 levels, long & wide, forceful & full

indications: excess syndrome

42
Q

deficient pulse

A

description: wide, but forceless in all 3 position (w/ light or heavy pressure), slack tension

indications: deficiency syndrome

43
Q

Thin/Thready Pulse

A

description: thin vessel (like thread), very distinct/clear w/o interruption of rhythm when pushing

indications:
- deficiency (qi, blood and/or yin)
- excess dampness

44
Q

Slippery/Rolling Pulse

A

description: quick but not rapid, smooth, rounded inside vessel

indications:
- food stagnation
- phlegm or damp
- excess heat

45
Q

Choppy/ Hesitant Pulse

A

description:
- slow, not smooth
- thin vessel
- rhythm is irregular in force & fullness
- uneven & sluggish

indications:
- stagnation of qi and blood
- flood, phlegm (excess)
- blood or essence or abortion (deficiency)

46
Q

Flooding/Surging Pulse

A

description:
- wide and forceful, fades gently
- vessel is wide and thick
- felt easily at superficial
- arrives with more pressure than it leaves
* (like ocean wave, comes strong & leaves calm)

indication: excess heat in qi level

47
Q

Abrupt/ Rapid Irregular Pulse

A

description:
- agitated and urgent
- rapid and irregular pulses

indications:
- yang excess
- extreme heat
- qi, blood, phlegm or food stagnation

48
Q

Knotted/Slow Irregular Pulse

A

description: slow with irregularly missed beats *pulse continues immediately a/f missed beat

indications:
- qi stagnation due to excess yin
- blood stasis
- phlegm

49
Q

Intermittent/Consistently Irregular Pulse

A

description:
- pauses at regular intervals
- a/f missed beat, long wait

indications:
- zang fu organ qi deficiency
- pain
- trauma
- wind syndrome
- fright

50
Q

Soggy/Soft Pulse

A

description:
- superficial, thin, forceless
- if pressed, becomes weaker

indications:
- damp
- deficiency syndrome

51
Q

Frail/Weak Pulse

A

description:
- deep, thin, forceless
- only felt on deep level by pressing
- if too much pressure, will lose pulse

indications:
- yin, yang, qi or blood deficiency

52
Q

Wiry/String-taut Pulse

A

description:
- long, taut, forceful under pressure or not
- maintains straight line beneath finger

indications:
- liver/gb diseases
- pain
- phlegm
- malaria

53
Q

Tense/Tight Pulse

A

description:
- rises and falls with strength
- vibrates to left and right (unstable, movable)

indications:
- cold syndrome
- pain
- food stagnation

54
Q

Racing/Swift Pulse

A

description:
- rapid, beats more than 7x per breath
- extreme version of rapid pulse
- rhythm is generally regular

indications:
- hyperactivity of yang w/ exhaustion of yin
- source qi collapse

55
Q

Excess v Flooding

A

both - wide and forceful

excess: force on all levels
*positions/ excess syndrome

flooding:
- stronger on superficial level than deep
- pulse arrives stronger than leaving
*Qi level heat, Yang Ming pattern, Lu/St Heat

56
Q

Wiry v Tight

A

both - strong, forceful, taut // pain

wiry:
- straight line w/ no vibration
- with or without pressure ^
* Lr/GB disease, phlegm, malaria
