select a topic, collect and focus your thoughts, organize thoughts, find a worthwhile idea and learn about it, form a thesis and plan writing

write it while prewriting is fresh in mind, write freely using planning as a guide, keep writing until there is a natural stopping point

review first draft, note the purpose of assignment, thesis and audience, peer review, add, cut, rework, or rearrange ideas as necessary

editing/proofreading draft
read it aloud to test for sense and sound, check for errors and peer edit

prepare neat copy of final, proofread, submit
