Qi Flashcards

Different Qi

1
Q

Original Qi (Yuan Qi) Pg 49

A

-Essence in the form of Qi
-Basis of Kidney Qi
-Facilitates transformation of Qi
-transforms Gathering Qi (Zong Qi) into
True Qi (Zhen Qi)
-Conduit for Triple Burner to circulate thru out body
-Facilitates transformation of Food Qi (Gu Qi) into Blood in the Heart.
-Comes out in Source Points

Q

Food Qi (Gu Qi) Pg 50

A
  • 1st stage of in transforming food into Qi.
  • Stomach Rots, Ripes; Spleen extracts finest essence into Gu Qi
  • Gu Qi rises to lungs via Middle Burner to combine with air (Qing Qi) to form Gathering Qi (Zong Qi)
  • Gu Qi rises to chest in Heart and transform into Blood.

Q

Gathering Qi (Zong Qi or Da Qi) Pg 51

A

-Gathers in the chest and useable by body
-Nourishes and support Lungs & Heart
Lungs - Qi/respiration, strength of voice,
promote flow to the extremities, interacts
w/Original Source (Yuan Qi)
Heart - pushes blood in blood vessel,
speech, tongue
-Coordinates with Original Qi to regulate breathing and aids Kidney
-impacted by emotional issues, weakens lungs, pulse is weak, etc

Q

True Qi (Zhen Qi) Pg 52

  • Nutritive Qi (Ying)
  • Defense Qi (Wei)
A
  • Last stage of transformation of Qi that circulate the channels and nourishes the organs
  • Originates from Gathering Qi & Lungs
  • Two forms: Nutritive Qi (Ying Qi) & Defensive Qi (Wei Qi)
  • Nutritive Qi: nourishes Internal Organs, linked to Blood, flows in channels & vessels
  • Defensive Qi: Exterior, protects from external pathogens, flows outside the channels, coarse part of food, water and is slippery in nature, circulates between skin and muscles 50x in 24hrs (25 day, 25 night), adjust opening/closing of pores, controlled by lungs, warms muscles, has roots in the Lower Burner (Kidneys), nourished by Middle Burner (Stomach/Spleen), spreads outward in the Upper Burner (Lungs).

Q

Upright Qi (Zheng Qi) Pg 54

A
  • Indicates all types of Qi that play a role in the defense of the body from invasion by external pathogenic factors
  • Includes: Defensive Qi, Nutritive Qi, Kidney Essence.
  • Contrast to Pathogenic factor (Xie Qi)

Q

Functions of Qi Pg 55-56

A
  • Transforming (foods, liquids (Yin) into clear (Yang)
  • Transporting (upward, outward, inward, downward)
  • Holding (holds fluid, blood in proper places)
  • Raising (upward movement, keeps organs from collapsing)
  • Protecting/Warming (Wei Qi circulates 25x exterior during day, 25x interior at nite)

Q

Qi Mechanism Pg 57

A

-Ascends, Descends, Entering, Exiting
-Freeways regulated by one way streets
-Balance of Yin/Yang crucial for smooth movements
Excess of Yang: too much ascend, exit
Excess of Yin: too much descend, entering
-Disruption = Qi stagnation or Qi Rebellion

Q

Directions of Qi Movement Pg 59

A

Lung Qi: descends toward the kidneys, ascends to diffuse Defensive Qi and sweat
Liver Qi: Ascends; controls smooth flow of Qi in all directions
Kidney Qi: ascends to the Lungs; sometimes descends (e.g. urination)
Spleen Qi: ascends
Heart-Kidney: Heart Qi descends to meet with ascending Kidney Qi.

Q

Pathology of Qi Movement Pg 59

A

Qi deficiency: some aspect of a person is insufficient
Qi sinking: prolapse (spleen or kidney Qi)
Qi stagnation: free-flow is impeded
Qi rebellious: flowing in wrong direction (against Emperor, weak Heart)

Q

Triple Burner Pg. 76

A

Allows Original Qi (Yuan Qi) emerging from between kidneys to differentiate in its different forms for its different functions around the body.

Q

Fire of the Gate of Life (Minister Fire)

A

Root of Pre-Heaven Qi
Source of Post-Heaven Qi
Foundation for the Original Qi
Provides Essence warmth to transform vital substances to transform Qi
Relies on Essence to provide the biological substance for transformation of Qi
Is identified with the Right Kidney (Yang)

Q

Channels enter/exit of Qi

A

Greater Yang (Tai Yang) & Greater Yin (Shao Yin) = superficial opens to exterior

Lesser Yang (Shao Yang) & Terminal Yin = Hinge

Bright Yang (Yang Ming) & Lesser Yin = Deep opens to interior

Q

Triple Burner’s Transformation of Qi Pg 88

A

Promotes making things go thru, letting things out, excreting
Ensures all passages of Qi and Water are open
Upper Burner Qi ascends
Middle Burner Qi descends
Lower Burner Qi mostly descends

Q

Pathology of Liver & Lungs pg 89

Liver insult lungs

A

Normal: Liver Qi ascends, Lung Qi descends
If Liver Qi fails to ascend & extend -> Qi stagnation, impact Lung Qi causing coughs, breathlessness
If Lung Qi fails to descend, impacts Liver Yang rising and will manifest in cough, breathlessness and headache. Also could cause Liver-Heat w/symptoms of cough, red eyes and headache

16
Q

Pathology of Stomach & Spleen Pg 89

A

Normal: Spleen Qi ascends to Lungs and Heart. Extracts the essence of food and sends upward toward lungs & heart where transforms into Qi & Blood.
Pathology: If Spleen Qi does not ascend -> pure essences won’t go up and results in diarrhea and deficiency in Qi & Blood
If no ascending Spleen Qi, organs will prolapse
If Stomach Qi does not descend, then nausea, vomit out the impurity that was supposed to descend into small intestine

17
Q

Five Energetic Layers

A
  1. Skin = Lungs
  2. Muscles = Spleen
  3. Sinews = Liver
  4. Blood Vessels = Heart
  5. Bones = Kidneys
18
Q

Corporeal Soul (Po)

A

Controls the Entering & Exiting of Qi and Essence.
Brings essence into play and regulates all physiological processes
Responsible for physical sensation, feelings and generally somatic expression.
Resides in Lungs and plays role in physiological processes of body.
Forms at conception.
Impacted by worry, sadness and grief which constrain its feeling and obstruct its movement = shortness of breath.

20
Q

Hun (Ethereal Soul)

A

Hun = Ethereal Soul is a repository of dreams, ideas, projects, aspirations, ideals, and inspiration. Provides the mind with psychic dimension.

Enters body 3 days after birth imparted by Father. After death, Ethereal Soul returns to the world of spirits.
Resides in Liver.

21
Q

Yi (Intellect)

A

Responsible for memory, concentration, thinking, logical thinking, capacity for studying and application.
Resides in Spleen.

22
Q

Zhi (Will Power)

A

Resides in Kidneys and is responsible for will-power, drive, determination and constancy.

23
Q

Shen (Mind)

A

Consciousness responsible for thought, feeling, emotions, perceptions and cognition.
Resides in Heart, why it is called Emperor.
