Quantitative Chemistry Flashcards
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The law of conservation of mass states that no atoms are lost or made during a chemical reaction so the mass of the products equals the mass of the reactants.
What happens when magnesium reacts with oxygen?
The magnesium reacts rapidly releasing a great deal of heat and light.
What happens when iron reacts with oxygen?
Iron reacts more slowly with oxygen taking weeks or months react.
What is an oxidation reaction?
Gaining oxygen is an oxidation reaction.
What happens when a metal reacts with oxygen?
We form a metal oxide and an oxidation reaction takes place.
What is a reduction reaction?
Losing oxygen is a reduction reaction.
What is relative atomic mass?
The average mass of atoms in an element taking into account masses and abundance of its isotopes.
What is relative formula mass?
Sum of the relative atomic masses of all atoms in the formula.
Reactivity order for acids? Fastest to slowest reaction.
Potassium
Sodium
Lithium
Calcium
Magnesium
