Quiz Five Flashcards
Describe a centrifugal pump.
For a centrifugal pump the fluid is pumped through and pushed through the pump perpendicularly using the difference in pressure and centrifugal force - not a positive displacement. It is inexpensive but cannot be used for sensitive products because of the shear forces - better for low viscosity products. just transports liquid from A to B
Describe a gear pump.
A gear pump pumps the fluid using two rotating gears - the gears move the fluid as they rotate causing in increase in pressure - positive displacement. Dependent on lobe space and gear speed - can’t stop flow rate when pump is on
Describe a rotary pump.
A rotary lobe pump pushed the fluid pump using the force of the rotating lobes - positive displacement - more gentle on product than gear pump
Describe a piston pump.
As the fluid flows there are two flaps - when the first one is open the second is closed allowing the piston chamber to fill up and once that’s full the second flap opens and the fluid is pushed through - positive displacement. Best pump for high viscosity products - could possibly burst with pressure build up
When are positive displacement pumps used?
Positive displacement pumps are usually used as a timing pump for unit operations
Describe the efficiency of a centrifugal pump.
Pump efficiency has a peak between the efficiency of the head and the volumetric flow rate
What is manometer?
A manometer is used to measure the pressure of a system
What is a pitot tube?
A pitot tube is an open-ended right-angled tube pointing into the flow of a fluid and used to measure pressure
What is an orifice meter?
An orifice meter is a tool used to measure pressure - a disk with a certain diameter is placed within a tube while a fluid flows - measure the pressure difference between the two sides
What is a Venturi meter?
A Venturi meter measures the pressure difference after the diameter of the tube decreases
