3 Basic types of defense tasks
Area- allows defender to maintain control of terrain. Enemy knows defender is in general location.
Mobile- Focuses on defeating enemy by allowing enemy to advance while the defender continuously withdraws to the point where the attacker is exposed and the defender can have a decisive counterattack.
Retrograde-Same purpose as Mobile, except executed in one move. Delay, Withdraw, Retirement.
Purpose for a Reserve Mission
Kept to rear to be available for a decisive engagement.
4 Defensive Techniques
Linear, Battle, Perimeter, Reverse Slope.
4 Types of BPs
Primary, Alternate, Supplementary, Subsequent (diff BPs for phases of operation).

- Identify avenues of approach
