Radiation Flashcards
What is alpha radiation stopped by
Paper
What is BETA radiation stopped by
Aluminium
What is gamma radiation stopped by
It is partially slowed down by led
What is used to detect radiation
A Geiger muller tube
What is alpha radiation
It is where a large nucleus gets rid of some protons by ejecting a helium nucleus and they are strongly ionising. It is two protons and two neutrons
What’s uses alpha radiation
Smoke detectors as it ionises air particles
What is beta radiation
It’s when an electron is released from the nucleus and has no mass and charge of -1 and they are moderately ionising and around 5 mm thick
What is BETA radiation used for
To test the thickness of a sheet of metal
What are gamma rays
They are electromagnetic radiation released by the nucleus and will travel for a long distance through air and are weakly ionising
What is half life
It is the time taken for the number of radioactive nuclei in an isotope to halve
What is background radiation
It is the low-level radiation that surrounds us all the time
Where does background radiation come from
Natural resources and human activity
What is irradiation
It is exposure to nuclear radiation
What are the risks of radiation
It can kill living cells
