Explain the composition of Police call signs:
First two letters designate the station code.
Third letter indicates the unit type.
Rostered shifts are designated by subsequent numbers.
Tabulate the appropriate urgent call sign and explain when its use is appropriate:
Urgent message (10-9) – Requires immediate action by the recipient, but does not necessarily indicate that the caller is in danger, but does relate to a matter which cannot wait for a break in normal traffic.
o A unit comes across a car crash and requires and ambulance.
o A wanted person flees from a unit.
o A unit attending a disorder job is outnumbered and requires backup.
Tabulate the appropriate emergency call sign and explain when its use is appropriate:
Emergency message (10-10) – Where a unit is in immediate danger. Emergency messages have absolute precedence over all other radio traffic.
o Officer being assaulted.
o Unit involved in a crash and crew in danger.
Tabulate the ‘K’ codes and explain their use:
K-1: No further action required. Close the CAD event.
K-3: Although reported as an offence, no offence disclosed No further action required. Close the CAD event.
K-6: A written report will be submitted for this incident. Close the CAD event.
K-9: A person has been arrested. Close the CAD event.
Tabulate the ‘10’ codes and explain their use:
10-1: A message for all units on this channel follows
10-2: En-route to a CAD event previously dispatched
10-3: Available for dispatch to CAD events
10-7: Arrived at scene of a CAD event
10-9: Urgent message follows
10-10: Officer in danger and requires immediate assistance.
