Rates Of A Reaction Flashcards

1
Q

Name 2 factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction

A

Temperature:
Increasing temperature, increases the rate of reactions and the particles move faster and therefore they will collide more frequently and have more energy

Concentration:
Increasing the concentration will increase the rate, there are more particles knocking about in the same volume of water
This makes collisions between the reactant particles more frequent

Q

What do reactant particles need to do to react with each other

A

reactant particles must collide with each other

the particles must have enough energy for them to react

Q

What is the activation energy for a reaction

A

The amount of energy that particles need to react is called the activation energy

It is the energy NEEDED to start a reaction

Q

Give 2 things that you can measure to find out the rate of a reaction

A

Change in mass:
Using a mass balance to notice if a gas has been produced, if a gas is realised then the mass will decrease
The quicker the reading on the mass balance drops, the faster the reaction

Colour change:
The faster the colour changes the quicker the reaction
A visual view of the reaction will make the estimate of speed more accurate
