Rates Of Reaction U1 Flashcards
What 4 ways can affect the rate of reaction
Temperature
Concentration
Particle size
Catalyst
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction
When the temperature increases the particles gain energy causing the particles to bounce off each-other which speeds up the reaction
How does concentration affect the rate of reaction
Increasing the concentration means there will be more particles which will speed up the reaction
How does particle size affect the rate of reaction
Decreasing the particle size increases surface area which speeds up the reaction
How does a catalyst affect rates of reaction
When a catalyst is used it increases reaction rate, which leads to a faster reaction
What is a catalyst
A catalyst helps speed up chemical reactions and remains unchanged/can be used again
Larger particle=smaller surface area meaning
A slower reaction
Smaller particle=larger surface area meaning
Faster reaction
What are the four different states
Solid (s)
Liquid (L)
Gas (g)
Aquias (aq)
What does aquias (aq) mean
Dissolves in water solution
What does homogeneous mean
A catalyst in the same state as a reactant
What does heterogenous mean
A catalyst in a different state as a reactant
What must happen for a reaction to occur
The particles that are reacting must collide with each other
What is an enzyme
Enzymes are biological catalysts
What is the equation for calculating rate of reaction
Average rate=
change in measurable quantity
\Change in time
