Raw materials Flashcards
What does limestone mainly consist of?
Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3).
What happens when lime stone in heated-show the equation.
It thermally decomposes. CaCO3->CaO+CO2
Calcium Carbonate->Calcium Oxide+Carbon Dioxide, other metal carbonates act like this.
What happens when the metal carbonate reacts with acid, remember a basic example.
CaCO3+H2SO4->CaSO4+CO2+H2O
What happens when you add water to any metal oxide?
Metal Oxide+Water->Metal hydroxide(alkali which can be used to neutralise acidic soils).
What is a metal ore?
A rock containing enough metal for it to be extracted.
What are ores usually?
Oxides-Aliminium Ore is called bauxite which is aliminium oxide.
List the ways that metal can be extracted from the rocks?
Chemically
Reduction using carbon
Electrolysis
How are chemicals used to extract metals from ores?
Its is used to get rid of the rock surrounding the metal and then electrolysis is used to purify this metal.
How is carbon used to extract metal?
The metal oxide is put in a blast furnace with the carbon and reduced to iron, with carbon dioxide being formed.
What if the metal is more reactive than carbon?
The metal is extracted by electrolysis which can be expensive.
What is electrolysis?
The breaking down of a substance with electricity.
What does electrolysis require to conduct electricity?
An electrolyte to carry electrons carrying the current in the circuit being made by the circuit. This is done as the ions carry the current as they go to the electrode of the opposite charge.
How can metals be used to extract other metals?
Displacement.
Describe displacement?
This is when a metal compound where the metal is less reactive than the other metal is extracted by the more reactive metal.
What are alloys?Why are they made?
Alloys are made by the mixing together of metals so that they suit a particular purpose.
