Predisposes to chronic pain and cardiac dysrhythmias
Prevents sleeping, normal function
May push body into catabolic state
Can lead to depression, aggression

What are the 5 steps for pain assessment and recognition?
A
- Observe patient without any interaction
- Observe patient while interacting with patient
- Observe patient while moving freely
- Observe response to palpation
- Score patient using a score sytem

How can we assess pain in anesthetized patients?
A
Patient movement
Increased RR, BP, HR
Signs of light plane of anesthesia (palpebral, nystagmus, jaw tone)
Knowledge of surgical procedure throughout surgery
