Recording brain Function Flashcards
Electroencephalograph (EEG)
Records electrical activity of the brain thru electrodes placed on the skull. Electrode cap
Magnetoencephalograph (MEG)
Measures faint magnetic fields generated by brain activity. Good temporal resolution… over time…
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Measures brain activity by recording emission of radioactivity from injected chemicals, typically glucose.
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
Scans brain to detect amount of hemoglobin with oxygen (dilation of blood vessels and subsequent decrease in oxygen concentration indicate activity.)
Computerized axial tomography (CAT)
X-rays passed thru head and recorded by detectors on opposite side to create structural image
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Recognize the electromagnetic energy released by water molecules after application and removal of magnetic field and thereby form image of the brain.
Ablation
Surgical removal of 1 pt of brain
Stereotaxic instrument
Used to make a lesion by directing an electrical current thru electrode into desired brain structure
Sham lesion
All steps of lesion without electrical current
