A

A

Patriotic appeal of slogans caused people to get carried away by a wave of patriotism. Scotland already had a proud military/ martial tradition

A

Fear of unemployment was an important factor in joining up. Recruitment numbers were high in areas with lots of unemployment.

A

It was seen as an opportunity to see the world that wouldn’t have been as accessible for most people as it is now so it was a way to perform heroic deeds and quite possibly to leave behind a boring or difficult job

A

Women and children were encouraged to press men into service by for example presenting them with a white feather to show them as a coward if they didn’t sign up

A

Men could sign up with men from their neighbourhoods or local areas and this would make the prospect of war less frightening for some. This did however result in mass loss among large areas of people
