What is the background to the reformation?
At the start of the 16th century most countries were catholic. The church was very rich and was led by the pope. People paid money to him.

(1) Monks were lazy and uneducated. They weren’t interested in a religious life. Monasteries were like 5 star hotels.
(2) Priests couldn’t read Latin and just read nonsense.
(3) churches said they had sacred stuff e.g.( Jesus blood)
(4) priests were rich but still made the poor pay more and hired monks to do the work.
(5) people paid money to secure a position in the church. They also interfered with German Politics.

To pay money to the church so the pope would pardon your sins.

Banished from the church.
What is the definition for a heretic?
Someone who refuses to accept the teachings of the church.

John Knox and John Calvin.
What other countries became Protestant?
Germany, Denmark, Norway and England.

(2) the Jesuits (to improve Catholic education)
(3) the inquisition (to punish heretics)

(1) the Catholic Church remained strong.
(2) the Jesuits established higher standards of catholic education.
(3) missionaries were sent to the U.S.A. And Asia to convert people to Catholicism.
