R - contrasting places - whats the history of canary wharf

A
  • originally a marsh below high tide, in the middle ages used inning to make it habitable (Thames estuary)
  • deeply deprived
  • although the creation of the west Indian docks, hugely le to the urbanisation of the isle of dogs, the Thame was used a shipping route and this led to job opportunities as people settled here, in 1901, 21,000 people. although they were dependent on the river trade so when the Thames was no longer a shipping route it led to dereliction and abandoned shipyards covering 60% of the area. 20,000 moved out of the area as there wasn’t any work and the 1981 census found 60% adult males were unemployed.
    this was largely due to containerisation

R - contrasting places - hebden bridge

A

originally the first settlers chose the hilltops to stay as the swampy valley floor was at risk of flooding.
- hebden started as a settlement where Halifax to burnley packhorse route dropped down into the valley in order to cross the river Hebden. (name comes from anglo saxons)
- in 1314 consent was given to built a mill ad impound the river, as the river became useful and in 1802 the rochdale canal was built, it was an ideal location for textiles manufacturing using the physical environment, coined the ton to name ‘touser town’ which has been since used by business inspired by the rich history of the place such as HebtroCo, before the factory closed to be converted into home used the last operating textiles mill to start making trousers in the town again.

  • the town was outcompete by th global shift with cheaper competing prices.
    -the arrival of hippies to Hebden changed the culture of the place, leaning into the arts, loca produce and sustainability. led o people from leeds and manc moving in to be comuting young r professionals, impacts on surrounding areas of todmorden ‘incredicble edible’
