How did van de Lubbe’s capture benefit Hitler?

A

Van de Lubbe was a Communist. This led to Hitler and Goebbe claiming that the Communists were going to stage a takeover. This gave the Communists a bad face and they lost support.

Hitler was able to persuade Hindenburg to sign the ‘Decree for the Protection of People and State’ (DPPS)

What did the DPPS do?

A

The Decree for the Protection of People and State suspended basic civil rights and allowed the Nazis to imprison their political opinions. Communist and socialist newspapers were banned.

The Enabling Act of 23rd of March, 1933 gave Hitler full power of Germany for four years. This marked the end of democracy and the end of the Weimar Government.
