reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
what is asexual reproduction?
A
a form of reproduction which requires only one parent - it creates genetically identical offspring.
2
Q
what is sexual reproduction?
A
a form of reproduction which requires the fusion of male and female gametes - it creates genetic variation.
3
Q
advantages of asexual reproduction:
A
- only one parent required
- less energy exerted as no need to search for a mating partner
- in certain conditions, lots of identical offspring can be made
4
Q
advantages of sexual reproduction:
A
- produces variation in offspring; meaning if the environment changes it is likely that an organism within the species will provide a survival instinct
- allows for selective breeding; mixing organisms with different characteristics can be bred to produce off spring with desirable characteristics
- speeds up natural selection
5
Q
define fertilisation
A
involves the fusion of male and female gametes to produce a zygote, which goes under cell division leading to development of an embryo
6
Q
Meiosis
A
Creates gametes
