What things reproduce by sexual reproduction?
Mammals, including humans, reproduce by sexual reproduction. This involves a male and female parent. Both parents produce sex cells called gametes.
How does the process, fertilisation occur?
These gametes known as a sperm and an egg, fuse together after sexual intercourse in a process known as fertilisation.
What is the function of the Penis?
Enters the females vagina during sexual intercourse.
What is the function of the testes?
Produces the sperm
What is the function of the scrotum?
Holds the testes at a cooler temperature than the body
What is the function of the Prostate Gland?
Produces liquid the sperm can swim in.
What is the function of the Sperm Duct?
Carries the sperm from the testicles to the penis.
What is the function of the Urethra?
Carries the sperm (and urine) out of the body.
What is the function of the ovaries?
This holds and releases the female eggs, generally once a month.
What is the function of the Fallopian tube?
The egg travels down this tube to the uterus and can be fertilised here by sperm.
What is the function of the Uterus?
This is where a fertlised cell will implant and a baby will develop
What is the function of the cervix?
This narrow opening connects the vagina to the uterus.
What is the function of the vagina?
This holds the penis during sexual intercourse and allows the baby to leave the womans body.
What are the 4 stages of the Menstrual cycle?
Days 1 to 5: This is the break down of the uterus lining. This process is known as Menstruation.
Days 6 to 13: a new lining develops in the uterus.
Day 14: the egg is released from the ovary. This is called ovulation.
Days 15 to 28: the lining of the uterus remains in place. It will break down in the first day of the menstrual cycle.
Explain the process of the baby growing?
The fertilised egg starts to divide and is now called a zygote. It continues to divide until it becomes an embryo. The embryo attaches to the uterus wall in a process known as implantation. After 8 weeks the embryo is called a foetus and can be recognised as human.
