Research Designs Flashcards
A design used to try different solutions to resolve an existing issue
Action Research
In-depth study of a particular research problem after than a sweeping statistical survey or comprehensive comparative inquiry
Case Study
Help provide answers to the questions of who, what, when, where and how associated with a particular research problem
Cannot conclusively ascertain answers to why
Descriptive
Understanding a phenomenon in terms of conditional statements “if X, then Y”
Causal
Blueprint of procedure that enables the researcher to maintain control over all factors that may affect the result of an experiment
Experimental
Uses secondary sources and a variety of primary documentary evidence such as diaries, official records, reports, archives and non-textual info
(Maps, pictures, audio and visual recordings)
Historical
Draws a conclusion by comparing subjects against a control group in cases where the researcher has no control over the experiment
Observational
Research done to a group involving members with a similarity
Usually used for medical science or applied social science
Cohort
No time dimension, groups are selected base on existing differences rather than random allocation, a reliance on existing differences
Cross-sectional
Conducted about a research problem when there are few or no earlier studies to refer or rely upon to predict an outcome
Exploratory
Follows the same sample over time and and makes repeated observations
Longitudinal
A research on different studies of the same topic
Meta-Analysis
