Respiration Pathways Flashcards
What is catabolism?
The breakdown of macromolecules, usually linked to energy production
ADP + Pi = ?
ADP + Pi = ATP + H2O
What is anabolism?
The building up of macromolecules from smaller molecules, usually requires energy
Is oxidation a catabolic or anabolic reaction?
Catabolic
Is biosynthesis a catabolic or anabolic reaction?
Anabolic
What is an exergonic reaction?
A chemical reaction where the change in the free energy is negative
What is an endergonic reaction?
Requires energy input to take simple reactants and build them up into complex products
What is meant by a ‘steady-state’ reaction?
The concentration of every component of the pathway will remain the same throughout if they are considered to be in a steady state - in equilibrium
What are the four stages of glucose catabolism?
- Glycolysis
- Link reaction
- TCA cycle
- Electron transport chain
How much ATP is generated per one glucose molecule?
36 ATP
What is the end product of glycolysis?
Two pyruvate molecules (3C)
How much ATP is generated from glycolysis per glucose molecule?
2 net ATP and 2 FADH, with a total of 4 ATP
Where does glycolysis occur?
In the cytoplasm
How much ATP is produced in the ETC from one FADH?
2 ATP
How much ATP is produced in the ETC from one NADH?
3 ATP
