Respiration; The Basics Flashcards

1
Q

What is respiration?

A

Respiration is a chemical process that involves the breakdown of nutrient molecules (mainly glucose molecules). It takes place in order to release the the energy stored within the bonds of these molecules. Respiration takes place in all living cells. It takes place in the presence of enzymes.

Q

What is the difference between breathing and respiration?

A
  1. Respiration is a chemical process whereas breathing is not
  2. Breathing only involves inhalation and exhalation whereas respiration is a chemical process where glucose is broken down to release energy.
