Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

What is the primary function of the respiratory system?

A

The diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract to increase the volume in the lungs and decrease pressure and inhale oxygen. These muscles then relax to expel carbon dioxide.

Q

Name the medical use of the stethoscope?

A

many medical professionals use the stethoscope for ausculation (listening to the internal sounds of the human body), put directly to the skin or sometimes over clothes, the rim is placed to the body and it is listened to through the ear piece

18
Q

Name the medical use of the BVM

A

Paramedics and nurses use them to help patients breathe before they can be hooked up the oxygen and to help them breath. It put to the face and squeezed in an even rhythm

19
Q

Name the medical use of the Spygmomanometer

A

doctors and nurses measure the blood pressure. It is tightened around the arm and the scale is checked

20
Q

Name the medical use of the Tuning Fork

A

First responders and chiropractors to detect fractures and breaks to test bone conduction. Pain is an indication of a possible fracture. Audiologist can also use them to test hearing

21
Q

Name the medical use of the reflex hammer

A

practitioners and neurologists use them to test deep tendon reflexes by hitting it perpendicular to the tendon

22
Q

Name the medical use of the Intubation Tube

A

Paramedics and other practitioners intubate patients who cannot breathe on their own. The tube is put down the trachea and sealed off while sedated and is then connected to a respirator

23
Q

Name the medical use of the Cannula

A

Doctors and respiratory therapists put it around chin and ears to nose so the patient can breathe in a higher concentration of oxygen with normal breathing.

24
Q

CXR

A

Chest X-Ray

25
Q

Dyspnea

A

difficulty breathing

26
Q

Tachypnea

A

Fast Breathing

A

Upper Respiratory Infection

29

ABG

A

Arterial Blood Gases

30
Q

Bradypnea

A

slow breathing

31
Q

Apnea

A

without breathing

32
Q

-capnia

A

carbon dioxide

33
Q

ICU

A

Intensive Care Unit

34
Q

Describe Emphysema

A

Gradually weakens the walls of the air sacs, which leads to the alveoli rupturing. This reduces the surface area of where gas exchange. This decreases the amount of oxygen going into the bloodstream. Progressively more short of breath.

35
Q

symptoms and signs of emphysema

A

Signs: S.O.B., wheezing, barrel chest lips or fingernails turn blue or gey with exertion and you are not mentally alert
Symptoms: Chest x-ray- changes in lung shape to indicate emphysema
Lung Volume- decreased volume
ABG- shows reduced Oxygen amounts

36
Q

emphysema risk factors

A
  • Smoking
  • Age
  • Exposure to Secondhand Smoke
  • Occupational exposure to fumes or dust
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor pollution
37
Q

Emphysema risk factors

A

Antibiotics, a lot of puffers, Oxygen therapy, stop smoking

Treatment may slow the progression of emphysema but won’t reverse damage.

38
Q

Travelling on the magic school bus, in what order would you pass everything?

A

nose/mouth, nasal cavity, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, bronchioles, alveoli

39
Q

what is the membrane around the lung called?

A

pleural membrane

40
Q

What are the body cavities?

A

Cranial cavity, spinal cavity, thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, pelvic cavity

41
Q

where is the dorsal cavity?

A

along the back

42
Q

where is the ventral cavity?

A

along the front
