Resting Metabolic Rate Flashcards
1
Q
Resting Metabolic Rate
A
- RMR
- Sum of metabolic processes of the active cell mass required to sustain normal regulatory balance and body functions during resting state
- Energy requirements at rest
2
Q
Percentages for Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
A
- 60-75% –> RMR
- 10% thermic effects of eating
- 15-30% physical activity
3
Q
Difference between RMR and BMR
A
- Often used interchangeably
- BMR must be conducted IMMEDIATELY after waking and in a controlled lab environment
- RMR is usually measured 3-4 hours after a light meal w/o prior physical activity
4
Q
Methods for measuring RMR
A
- Direct calorimetry
- Indirect calorimetry
- RMR formulas
5
Q
Direct Calorimetry
A
- Estimates energy production through measuring body heat production
- Measured through water flow in heat exchanger
- Difference in water temperature entering and leaving the chamber where the individual lays
- Very expensive
- Not practical for large scale settings
6
Q
Indirect Calorimetry
A
- Uses mouthpiece and tubing, oftentimes hood and canopy
- Feasible for clinical or lab testing
- More costly and accurate than RMR formulas
7
Q
RMR Formulas
A
- Less accurate
- Common in fitness settings
8
Q
Factors influencing RMR
A
- Genetics
- Gender (women have lower RMR due to decreased lean mass)
- Age (decreases 2% after 20 and 3% per decade)
- Weight/height
- % BF (leaner = higher RMR)
- Exercise
- Disturbed eating patterns
9
Q
Preparing for RMR Testing
A
- Fast overnight, or at least 4 hours following a small meal
- Don’t smoke morning of
- Drink lost of water night before
- Avoid exercise night before and on morning of test
10
Q
RMR Test
A
- Typically 30 minutes (20 minutes resting, 10 minutes usable data)
- Do as little as possible during test
- DON’T SLEEP
- Relax, breathe normally
11
Q
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
A
- 2-3 hour test that checks blood glucose levels before and after a special sweet drink
- Tells how the body processes glucose
- Diabetes is diagnosed at 2 hour blood glucose of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl
12
Q
Normal OGTT Result
A
Less than 140 mg/dl
13
Q
Prediabetes OGTT Result
A
140-199 mg/dl
14
Q
Diabetes OGTT Result
A
200 mg/dl or higher
