Revision List Flashcards

1
Q

What is a cold environment

A

Areas of land permanently covered by ice. They are covered by glaciers, ice sheets and have frozen soil/rock. The temperature is constantly below freezing

Q

How does latitude and altitude affect where we find cold environments.

A

The further a place is from the equator, the mor likely it will be a cold environment. Also if it has a very high altitude it will become a cold environment

Q

How do glacial budgets impact rates of erosion and the movement of ice?

A

If it is hot, then the glacier will retreat and there will be less erosion. HOT=ABLATION

If it is cold, then the glacier will advance and the erosion will be more. COLD=ACCUMULATION

Q

What is freeze thaw weathering

A

When the meltwater fills up in the cracks between the rocks and freezes overnight, expanding and creating more cracks in the rock.

Q

How are U shaped valleys formed.

A

It starts of with a V shaped valley with a river going through it, wich has eroded it into a V shape. Ice flows through the valley and through erosional prossesess and bulldozing, a U shape is formed

Q

What would happen when all the ice melts.

A

Antarctica would be almost gone and have less life than it did.
All the continents would suffer major loss.
Most capitals are near water, and would flood and be destroyed.
