Revision List Flashcards
What is a cold environment
Areas of land permanently covered by ice. They are covered by glaciers, ice sheets and have frozen soil/rock. The temperature is constantly below freezing
How does latitude and altitude affect where we find cold environments.
The further a place is from the equator, the mor likely it will be a cold environment. Also if it has a very high altitude it will become a cold environment
—— is when snow builds up at the top of the glacier.
Accumulation
—— is when the ice at the bottom of the glacier melts and retreats
Ablation
Cold environments are found in a high latitude
Or low latitude.
High latitude
Where are cold environments normally, if they
Are closer to water - or further inland and not close to the sea.
Further inland and closer to the sea
What is a glacier called, when it has inputs-prossesess-and outputs.
A glacial budget.
How do glacial budgets impact rates of erosion and the movement of ice?
If it is hot, then the glacier will retreat and there will be less erosion. HOT=ABLATION
If it is cold, then the glacier will advance and the erosion will be more. COLD=ACCUMULATION
What is plucking
When the meltwater goes around the loose rock and freezes and pulls it away into the glacier.
What is abrasion
When a rock is pulled out of the bedrock and freezes into the glacier and scrapes away at the ground.
What is freeze thaw weathering
When the meltwater fills up in the cracks between the rocks and freezes overnight, expanding and creating more cracks in the rock.
How are U shaped valleys formed.
It starts of with a V shaped valley with a river going through it, wich has eroded it into a V shape. Ice flows through the valley and through erosional prossesess and bulldozing, a U shape is formed
How do you know if the land is steep on an OS map
The contour lines are close together.
How do you work out how to read or write a 4/6 figure grid reference
Along the corridor and up the stairs
What would happen when all the ice melts.
Antarctica would be almost gone and have less life than it did.
All the continents would suffer major loss.
Most capitals are near water, and would flood and be destroyed.
